Jefferson City sales tax receipts top projections

For the second month in a row, Jefferson City sales tax receipts have come in above projections, with receipts totaling more than $1 million in each month.

At the Finance Committee meeting Thursday, City Administrator Steve Crowell said revenues largely have been coming in as expected, but he was unsure of what caused the most recent surge.

April sales tax receipts, which reflect the February reporting period, came in ahead of projections in all three categories. The city's 1 percent general sales tax came in $322,461 above April projections, leading to a projected year-end surplus of $634,054.

"That's a good thing," Crowell said. "We just can't really figure out what may be leading to that."

Crowell noted staff had contacted Cole County officials, who also saw a large surplus in sales tax receipts.

The half-cent capital improvement sales tax came in $164,636 ahead of projections, with a total year-end surplus projected to be $322,562.

The half-cent parks sales tax came in $164,662 ahead of projections, and the total year-end surplus is projected to be $323,271.

Because of the increase in sales tax revenue, the city's revenue forecast model is projecting the 2015 budget will end roughly $775,000 ahead of total revenue projections.
