In an April 2 letter Harold Horstmann called citizensclimatelobby.org a "leftist political blog." Citizens' Climate Lobby is a diverse, nonpartisan organization focused on a solution to what climate scientists warn is a dire threat to civilization. George Shultz, who served as secretary of state under Ronald Reagan, serves on its advisory board. Is he a "leftist?" I guess it is a matter of perspective.
Horstmann was responding to a letter of mine, where I'd written, "in a Reuter poll, 66 percent of respondents said world leaders are morally obligated to reduce CO2 emissions, and that other polls showed support for the clean power plan." An example of those "other polls" would be the June 2014 Washington Post-ABC News poll, where 70 percent of respondents supported limiting greenhouse gases as proposed in the Environmental Protection Agency's clean power plan.
Horstmann countered with a Gallup poll, which was released after I submitted my letter. It didn't negate the polls I referenced. In the Gallup poll, 32 percent of respondents said they worried about global warming "a great deal." Horstmann makes that out to be a small number, but he left out that another 23 percent "worry a fair amount." To me that would be 55 percent of the respondents worry about global warming.
My point was that Americans want our leaders to take action to reduce CO2 emissions, how much Americans worry is a different question.
Horstmann "documented" his letter. He provided a link to cnsnews.com, which uses the motto "The Right News. Right now." It was founded under the name Conservative News Service. He links to breitbart.com, another extreme conservative website; and to the Global Warming Policy Foundation, a think tank headquartered at the UK Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Follow these links provided by Horstmann and you will find information biased by politics or special interest. Maybe people who see these websites as fair and balanced could possibly view George Shultz and Citizens' Climate Lobby as leftist.
