Area man faces multiple gun charges

A Centertown man has been charged with three counts of unlawful use of a weapon for incidents that occurred Monday.

Curtis Matheney, 20, is also charged with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action.

Court documents state authorities were dispatched at 4:43 p.m. to the 800 block of Eastland Drive where a woman told them she was meeting Matheney to retrieve her vehicle. The woman said Matheney refused to turn over the vehicle and when she attempted to grab the keys through the partially open driver's door window, Matheney grabbed and pulled her arm. She entered the passenger door and attempted to get the keys again, but Matheney choked her and held a handgun to her neck.

Court records said the woman got out of the vehicle and Matheney drove about 50 feet away and stopped in a parking lot. A male was seated on a nearby bench and Matheney motioned for him to approach his vehicle. The male said Matheney uttered, "Do something!" and brandished a handgun. Matheney then exited the parking lot, going south on Eastland Drive.

At 8:25 p.m., the female went to a male relative of Matheney's in the 11500 block of Lookout Trail to try and get her property back. She and Matheney had been living together at this location for about a month.

While the two talked, Matheney pulled up to the property, got out of his vehicle and came running up to the male relative's truck with a .380-caliber handgun. The relative got into the truck and drove off with Matheney chasing the truck on foot.

Around 8:41 p.m., Matheney then went back and pointed the gun at two females who were in another truck on the property. As the women attempted to get away from Matheney, he shot at their truck.

One of the females told police she believed Matheney was going to kill her. She said Matheney earlier in the evening had threatened to kill her family and blow up their house.

At 9:39 p.m., authorities conducted a traffic stop at Lookout Trail and Shangri-La Court on a vehicle Matheney was believed to be traveling in. Matheney was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken into custody.
