20% turnout forecast for Jefferson City, school races

Tuesday will be Steve Korsmeyer's first election as Cole County clerk, and he's expecting a good turnout and a busy day.

"I'm excited and I've learned a lot in my first few months on the job," he said. "The amount of work and the preparation is a lot more than what I realized. Making sure the poll workers are trained and getting the ballots all together takes a lot of time."

Usually, municipal elections generate a low voter turnout, but Korsmeyer believes this election could be different.

"I believe the last municipal election the voter turnout was around 10 percent, but I think with the interest in the mayor's race and school board race in Jefferson City, we could see a 20 percent turnout," he said. "It's disappointing if people don't turn out."

Four challengers and an incumbent are vying for two open seats on the Jefferson City Board of Education. In order of their ballot appearance, the candidates are: Pam Murray, Joy Sweeney, Michael Couty, Dan Renfrow and Adrian Hendricks II.

A six-way race is set for the Jefferson City mayoral seat with 3rd Ward Councilman Bob Scrivner, Leonard Steinman, Carrie Tergin, Edith Vogel, Roy Viessman and Richard S. Groner all hoping to win the Tuesday election. All other Jefferson City offices are unopposed on the April ballot.

Korsmeyer reminded residents that a sample ballot with the issues being voted on is available on the clerk's website, colecounty.org/clerk.
