Missouri softball takes first game against Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. - Two key home runs helped the Missouri softball team capture the opening game of its three-game series at Georgia, as the Tigers claimed a 5-2 win Friday night.

After the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Tigers tied it when Kelsea Roth smacked a solo homer in the top of the second. It was the senior's 39th homer of her career, leaving her eight shy of tying the school's career record of 47 put up by Jen Bruck from 2005-08.

Missouri added a run in the frame when Kirsten Mack scored on an error, but Georiga tied it at 2 in the bottom of the third.

The Tigers took the lead for good when Sami Fagan launched a two-run homer in the top of the fifth.

Missouri got an insurance run in the seventh when Fagan picked up an RBI single.

Fagan ended up 2-for-4 with thre RBI, while Emily Crane went 2-for-3.

Tori Finucane (12-6) got the win for the Tigers, pitching four innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Paige Lowary worked the final three innings and gave up just two hits while striking out three.

Missouri (24-7 overall, 6-4 Southeastern Conference) and Georgia (29-10, 6-7) will play again at 1 p.m. today.
