Your Opinion: Abusive spending not necessary illegal

Dear Editor:

Regarding Jennifer Smith's March 29 response to my original letter concerning the abuse of taxpayer money for fundraising activities, I am more than willing to acknowledge that Mr. Obama is not in violation of any rules. Just because something is not against the rules doesn't mean that it is right to abuse it.

It is my opinion that under any administration regardless of the president's party affiliation, expenses should be deducted from the money that is contributed. Not to say that I agree with it, but when this rule was put into place under the Reagan administration, we didn't have a $16 trillion debt.

Each of us as American citizens, including the president, should take a hard look at where our money is being spent and take responsibility to get unnecessary government spending under control.

My March 24 letter to the News Tribune was copied directly from the letter that I submitted to U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer. The purpose of my letter was to bring to the attention of my representative and to the public just one of the many ways in which taxpayer money is needlessly directed.

Smith's readiness to come to the defense of Obama is to be admired. If only such conviction and tenacity were directed toward defending our constitution against those who are so intent upon seeing it dismantled.
