Sheriff's deputies seek suspect who drove off

Cole County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday were still searching for a man who drove off after a Tuesday afternoon traffic stop.

This began after the sheriff's department responded to the 700 block of Deer Creek Road for a call about a possible narcotics violation about 3 p.m. The license plate of the vehicle in question was checked, and the vehicle was located and stopped at the Rainbow Market on Rainbow Drive.

The driver was later identified as Matthew Haulenbeek, 24.

When the deputy got out of his patrol vehicle to talk with Haulenbeek, the driver left at a high rate of speed. The deputy chased Haulenbeek from just outside Jefferson City into rural Miller County, and Haulenbeek took many side roads in an attempt to lose the deputy.

During that chase, Haulenbeek bailed out of his car in the 100 block of Hackberry Road and ran into the woods. Because of the rural area, authorities couldn't set up a perimeter.

After Haulenbeek was seen Tuesday night, Cole and Miller County deputies again went to the scene - but, again, were unable to arrest him.

Haulenbeek is wanted for a probation violation, with a no-bond warrant.

The sheriff's department will seek additional charges of felony resisting arrest, careless and imprudent driving and possession of methamphetamine.

The vehicle was impounded and taken to the Cole County Sheriff's Department.
