Your Opinion: Evaluate teachers on combination of criteria

Dear Editor:

I am a retired educator with some further thoughts on the debate about the proposed Amendment 3. I agree wholeheartedly with the letters written by David Ganey and Marcia Ramatowski. I would also point out that there are many factors affecting student performance that are totally out of the control of the teacher.

Some examples are: whether the student has gotten a good night's sleep; whether their family esteems a good education as vital; whether there is chaos in the home; and where they are on the bell curve of ability level are just a few.

To expect all students to perform at proficient or advanced levels is as unrealistic as expecting all Olympians to receive gold medals.

To adopt a teacher evaluation system based largely on "quantifiable student performance data" that would be used in decisions about paying or retaining personnel is ill advised. Of course there needs to be evaluation, but it should be the result of a combination of criteria, not just student performance.
