The Mayor's Cup - sparking a sailing interest

The Fifth Annual Mayor's Cup Regatta was Saturday afternoon at Binder Lake.

The event was hosted by Capital City Sailing Association (CCSA) with the help of the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department. The event was open to all sailors. The first race began at 1 p.m., and two more immediately followed.

It was also in conjunction with an Open House ceremony for the CCSA, so racers got a chance to meet and great members of the association that hosted the event.

According to official sailing rules, the racers scores are calculated by multiplying the time taken to complete each race by variables based on the racer's boat model. This adjustment makes the competition more equal, since different boats can have different advantages and capabilities in the water, said Jamie Rasmussen, who sailed the course last year with her father Steve.

Jim Crabtree, of the CCSA, has said he hopes events like the Regatta will help spark spectators' interest in sailing and encourage new membership in his organization. He previously said the CCSA has steadily grown since its creation from a 2008 advertisement in the newspaper. The organization's number of boats has expanded from five to 14 since its inception. The association hosts club races on the first and third Saturday of each month from early May to the end of October.
