Evan Schulte didn't want to wait too long.

Schulte, a Fatima senior, was preparing for a penalty kick with 3:30 remaining in the first overtime period of Thursday night's game against Helias at the 179 Soccer Park.

"I had to calm myself down," Schulte said. "I can't take too long because if I do, I start thinking and that's when I screw up. I have to get up and place it where I think it needs to go."

Think long, think wrong.

Schulte lined a low shot into the right corner of the net to give the Comets a 1-0 victory against the Crusaders.

"This is a big win for us," said Schulte, who has 13 goals on the season. "We know most of the players on Helias and we know they're a very good team."

Fatima coach Kirby Keth had confidence in Schulte, who was the one fouled in the box to bring about the penalty kick.

"He was a little hurt when he landed awkwardly on the foul," Keth said. "But he's a great finisher, he knows what to do with the ball."

For the Crusaders, it was another frustrating night on offense. Helias has now been blanked in two straight games.

"It's hard to lose that way when you dominate a game like I think we did," Helias coach Chuck Register said. "We just couldn't get the ball into the back of the net."

The Crusaders had the best chance to score in regulation. It came in the final seconds of the second half when Braden Remmert had a shot bounce off the far post and back into the field of play.

"It hits a round post and goes out, c'mon," Register said. "When it hits a round post, it should go in."

The shot definitely got the attention of the Fatima bench.

"I trust in my keeper and I thought he would keep it out if he could reach it," Keth said. "But that was way too close."

Helias finished with a 22-5 edge in total shots, including a 6-2 advantage in those on net. But none in the net.

"To have that many shots and not score, I don't know how that happens," Register said. "We need to find some luck somewhere."

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Fatima (9-3).

"We started 8-0 and I think we got a little big-headed," Schulte said. "I think losing a couple of times made us work harder."

Keth believes it was a quality win for the Comets, who are scheduled to host Stover today.

"We're a solid team," he said. "We've got good leadership and good intensity. We were able to hang in there through a few moments that were a little iffy and still get the win."

Helias (3-7) is back in action today when it opens play in the Capital City Invitational against Poplar Bluff. Game time is 7 p.m.

In Thursday's JV game, Fatima topped Helias 1-0. Gavin Ownbey had the goal for the Comets.
