'Fireball Run' blazing to Jefferson City

In just 2½ weeks, Jefferson City and some other Missouri locations will be featured on "Fireball Run - America's Frontier," an online television reality show starting its eighth season.

Jefferson City is to be seen on the Oct. 3 episode, with live-streaming beginning at 11 a.m. The city was chosen last November to be a part of this year's episodes after the Convention and Visitors Bureau and Jefferson City government worked together to recruit the production.

WWE wrestler Raven will host this year's shows.

The competition was inspired by, but is different from the national road race contest portrayed in the 1981 movie "Cannonball Run," that starred Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise.

In "Fireball Run," 40 competing teams and their vehicles are like "pawns on a massive game board the size of America" as they participate in what's called an "adventurally" (adventure-rally).

Competitors seek to move from one city to the next by solving trivia questions based on a geographical position, then completing a series of tasks that, the producers said in a news release, range "from zany to life-changing."

Top prize? "Bragging rights and a plastic road sign," the news release said, plus the knowledge that you helped raise awareness for missing children.

"Every team is assigned a child missing from their home town region," the release said, "and tasked with distributing posters featuring the child.

"The effort annually distributes over 50,000 posters across America and has aided in 43 child recoveries since 2007."

Producers emphasize that their show is "filmed in real time," unlike the typical reality TV series that it shot ahead of time, then edited.

This year's production begins Sept. 28.

Katherine Reed, the CVB's communications manager, said filming is expected to occur at several locations, including the Capitol and Governor's Mansion.

State Rep. Steve Lynch, R-Waynesville, and Cecilia Murray represent Pulaski County in the contest.

Their goal is to promote Missouri in the national program - and to raise awareness about the disappearance of Kylie Lawrence, Springfield, who was 16 when she last was seen July 28, 2013.
