Jays football shuts out DeSmet

ST. LOUIS - Jefferson City looked like a team that came ready to play.

And that might be an understatement.

The Jays scored 21 points in the first three minutes and 16 seconds and held on claim a 34-0 win Friday against DeSmet at Suntrup Field.

"That was a great start for us," Jefferson City head coach Ted LePage said. "Our energy carried over from last week. I thought our confidence was there. Really great way to start the game."

Darryl Williams returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Elijah Pittman ran for 137 yards on 21 carries while adding two touchdowns to lead Jefferson City, which improved to 3-1 on the season.

Williams and Zach Bond both had an interception and the Jays forced six DeSmet to help pace the defensive attack.

DeSmet (0-4) compiled 205 total yards - 99 on the ground. The Spartans lost three fumbles and had two passes intercepted.

Jefferson City quarterback Isaac Roling was 3-of-8 for 90 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jake Pridgin to give the Jays a 31-0 lead with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

Pridgin added 78 yards rushing on 18 carries in Jefferson City's new power formation.

Williams set the tone early when he took the opening kickoff 100 yards for a score to give the Jays a 7-0 lead with 11:44 left in the first quarter.

DeSmet followed by fumbling the ensuing kickoff and the Jays took over on the Spartans 30-yard line.

Roling connected with Ripken Dodson for a 25-yard completion and Pittman capped off the short drive with a 1-yard run to put Jefferson City up by 14 with 11:02 left in the first.

DeSmet returning the ensuing kickoff to the Jays' 16-yard line, but Jefferson City forced the Spartans to turn it over on downs. Pittman followed with an 81-yard carry to extend the Jays' lead to 21 with 8:44 to play in the opening period.

J.T. Bohlken added to the first-half attack with a 25-yard field goal to make it 24-0 with 5:43 to play in the second quarter.

Roling's 40-yard pass to Pridgin extended Jefferson City's lead to 31 and Bohlken added a 27-yard field goal to put the Jays up by 34 with 2:59 left in the fourth quarter.

DeSmet quarterback Alik Shelton was 10-of- 27 for 106 yards and had two balls intercepted.

Brian Pandolfo added 100 yards rushing - all in the second half - on four carries to lead the Spartans.

Jefferson City will host Rogers (Ark.) on Friday.
