Helias beats down Hickman

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Hickman has had Helias' number in recent years, taking the last three games in the series against the Crusaders.

But Helias had the numbers Friday night as Malik Davis ran for 280 yards and two touchdowns as the Crusaders defeated the Kewpies 48-7.

"Not only did we beat them, but I think this is the first time in nearly 50 years that we've beaten them up here," Helias coach Phil Pitts said.

Davis ran for scores from 82 and 88 yards as he needed just 15 carries to accumulate his 280 yards on the ground. Davis sat out the final quarter of the game.

"It was nice to see us hit some big plays," Pitts said.

Both of Davis' touchdowns runs came in the first quarter. They were sandwiched around Hickman's lone touchdown, which came when the Kewpies recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.

Helias added two scores in the second quarter. Alex Faddoul made it 20-7 with a 1-yard run before he hooked up with Weston Porter on a 14-yard touchdown strike with a little more than a minute remaining before halftime.

The Crusaders led 27-7 at intermission.

Helias scored twice in the third quarter as well, with the touchdowns coming in a 2:30 span late in the period. Clayton Winter scored from a yard out to make it 34-7. Faddoul then hit Adam Bax for a 25-yard touchdown. Porter and Bax connected on a 2-point conversion pass to make it 42-7 in favor of Helias and bring the running clock into play.

The Crusaders final touchdown came on a 5-yard run by Jacob Storms midway through the fourth quarter.

It was a potent night on the ground for Helias, which finished with 414 rushing yards on just 36 carries. Helias had 71 passing yards for a total of 485 yards in the game.

Hickman (0-4) had 32 rushing yards on 32 carries. The Kewpies threw for 102 yards as the Crusaders finished with three quarterback sacks.

Helias (4-0, ranked No. 2 in Class 4) is back in action Saturday, Sept. 20, at home against Battle. Game time is 7 p.m.
