Missouri House OKs booze at special Capitol events

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri representatives are fighting Gov. Jay Nixon for the right to sell beer and wine in the Capitol during certain events.

House members voted Wednesday to override the governor's veto of a bill allowing alcohol sales at Capitol events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the building or the 200th anniversary of Missouri's statehood.

The measure now moves to the Senate, where a two-thirds majority vote is needed to finalize the veto override.

The bill would allow sales of food, drinks and souvenirs that supporters say could help raise money for state celebrations.

Nixon said he vetoed the bill because it presents a poor image to visiting children and families.

Drinking alcohol already is permitted and common at the Capitol.

Capitol alcohol bill is HB1359
