Helias volleyball rolls to win against Camdenton

Player after player kept subbing in from the bench, and it resulted in the same thing: Point after point for the Helias volleyball team.

Fresh off a rugged early season stretch where the Lady Crusaders had their regular rotation get almost all of the playing time, everyone got in on the action Tuesday.

The new look didn't faze Helias, as it steamrolled its way to a 25-15, 25-11 rout of the Camdenton Lady Lakers at Rackers Fieldhouse.

Helias coach David Harris said it was nice to see some fresh faces on the court.

"Those kids deserve to play," he said. "They make the people that have been playing better. (The regulars) have been going against them every day in practice.

"A lot of other years, they would be starting. But this year, they know they've got to bide their time. I thought they did a great job of stepping in tonight and playing well."

Helias raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first game of the night and it eventually grew to 19-10. After that, it was just a matter of finding out what the final margin would be, and it ended at 10.

"You could tell they might have been a little nervous at first," Harris said. "But they settled down. Clarissa (Fennessey) came in and played really good defense and served well, Abby Farrow came in and did a good job, Megan Brown, Suzie Kuensting, they all came in and did a really nice job. That's the way they play in practice."

There wasn't as much playing time to go around in the second game, because the Lady Crusaders ended it quickly.

Camdenton was within 13-8, but Helias won 12 of the final 14 points to turn it into a rout.

"With only one match this week, we could rest people," Harris said. "Tory Wiley has been fighting a shoulder issue, and it's getting better, but we're giving her the week off so it can heal up. This was a good time to give her a night off."

The depth was evident for Helias, as eight different players had kills. Erica Haslag led the way with nine, while Laura Schieber, Molly Sandbothe, Hannah Eynard and Kuensting had two each.

"(This match) allowed us to experiment with a couple different lineups," Harris said. "We let Erica and Molly hit outside for one game each, Hannah Eynard played right side and left side. So we were able to do some things and were successful.

"I think it will help us down the road in case we have, let me knock on some wood, that injury or someone gets sick for a night. Then it's not a strange thing to throw them in there, we'll have done it before. Hopefully this will help us down the road."

Also for Helias (7-0), Ashley Dudenhoeffer had 19 assists, Sandbothe had three blocks and Fennessey had eight digs.

Helias returns to action at 6 p.m. Monday when it hosts Quincy (Ill.).

In Tuesday's JV match, Helias claimed a 25-16, 25-20 win.

Laura Vanderfeltz racked up 17 digs for the Lady Crusaders (11-0), Lexy Lamb dished out 13 assists, Erin Wyrick posted six kills and Kelsey Schenewerk had eight service points.

Helias also won the freshman match, taking a 25-7, 25-20 decision.

Alyssa Sullivan had 10 service points, including four aces, and nine assists for the Lady Crusaders (7-0). Amie Henson also had nine assists, while Elisabeth Mealy had 12 digs. Kelsey Brester, Morgan Miles and Rachel Schulte had four kills apiece.
