Jays, Comets outrun all at Marshall Invitational

Jefferson City and Fatima open cross country season on high note

The Jefferson City and Fatima cross country programs opened the 2014 season on a high note.

The Jays and Lady Jays both earned first-place finishes in the large-school division, while the Comets and Lady Comets swept the small-school division Saturday at the Jim Marshall Invitational at Cole County Park.

Jackson Schwartz of Jefferson City won the boys large-school race in 16:37.44, while Cole Biesemeyer was fourth at 17:52.44.

Eli Raithel (18:15.77) was eighth, Ethan Hart (18:16) was ninth, Brendan Bena (18:29) was 10th, Cody Irwin (18:35.08), and Will Theroff (19:19.23) was 17th to round out the finishers for the Jays.

Kenzie Gourley (20:11.46) finished fifth, Kaley Ruff (20:15.24) was sixth, and Tori Bonnot (20:37.90) was seventh to lead the Lady Jays to victory. Brenna Duncan (21:38.51) was 13th, and Natalie Vance (22:26.40) was 21st to round out the runners for Jefferson City.

Helias finished second on the girls side in the large-school division. Kaitlyn Shea led the field at 19:53.34, while Kayla Yansky finished second in 19:54.30 to pace the Lady Crusaders.

Kylie Frank (21:17.12) was 12th, Molly Light (21:58.85) was 15th, Kylie Mullholland (22:12.85) was 19th, Abby Hake (22:55.88) was 26th, and Alicia Engelbrecht (23:39.89) was 28th to round out the field for Helias.

On the boys side, Helias earned a fifth-place finish.

Elliot Knernschield finished fifth in 17:56 to lead the Crusaders, while Thomas Asmar was 12th at 18:39. Nathan Wieberg (19:58) was 31st, Joe Bruemmer (20:14.43) was 34th, Ethan Rackers (20:30.37) was 36th, Jordan Wieberg (21:07.63) was 40th, and Trent Distler (21:48.33) was 42nd.

The small-school division was a battle between defending state champions. Fatima won the Class 2 title on the boys and girls side, while Russellville the Indians and Lady Indians were the top team in Class 1 last season.

The Fatima girls swept the top five spots while earning a first-place finish with 15 points.

Brianna Haller led the field at 20:16.36, while Riley Caminit was second at 20:30.85. Anna Massman was third at 21:46.83, Madison Day was fourth at 22:05.86, and Samantha Even was fifth at 22:34.39.

The California Lady Pintos finished second with 57 points.

Fatima finished with 33 points to win the boys' small-school title, edging second-place Russellville by 19 points.

Alex Thompson of Russellville was the top runner on the boys side with a time of 17:07.44. Hunter Hennier of Fatima was second at 17:28.16, while Matthew Fringer of Russellville was third at 18:06.12.

California finished fourth as a team with 106 points.
