JC man charged with holiday assault

A Jefferson City man has been charged in connection with an assault that occurred over the Labor Day weekend.

Cornelius Hayes, 34, of 1124 E. Atchison St., is charged with second-degree assault, armed criminal action, possession of marijuana and violation of an order of protection.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Hayes assaulted a man in the 200 block of Commercial Way in the early morning hours of Aug. 31.

Hayes punched the victim repeatedly in the face and head with brass knuckles.

The victim suffered large lacerations and contusions to his face and head, and had a minor injury to his hand when he grabbed a knife away from Hayes.

Hayes ran from the scene, but was located a short time later by authorities.

Brass knuckles and plastic baggies containing marijuana were located near where Hayes was apprehended.

The victim of the assault has a current order of protection against Hayes.

Hayes was released on a $5000 bond. Later, the prosecuting attorney's office asked for and was granted an arrest warrant to be re-issued with a new bond of $100,000.
