Smell of fall? Open burning starts Saturday

Open burning of yard waste in Jefferson City is permitted starting Saturday during daylight hours only and ends on March 1.

This year, the fire department is asking residents to avoid burning on Nov. 8 during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help promote health and safety for the 2014 State Cross Country Event at the Oak Hills Golf Course. This is a request that residents avoid burning during these hours on Nov. 8 only.

All fires must be supervised at all times. A garden hose, fire extinguisher or other means of controlling the fire must be present at the fire in case a problem develops. Avoid burning on windy days.

Do not burn in the street or curb lines of the street. It is recommended that all fires be in small piles to prevent large amounts of smoke and be 10-15 feet from property lines, structures and power lines.

Smoke from fires may not be welcomed by neighbors. A complaint on open burning fire can lead to extinguishing of the fire.

Citizens of Jefferson City also may use the compost facilities at 2417 Southridge Drive to dispose of yard waste. The waste that will be accepted includes limbs 6 inches diameter or less and in lengths of 4 feet or less, grass clippings, leaves, wood chips and flocked Christmas trees.
