Fatima soccer advances to district championship

ST. JAMES - Behind two goals from Evan Schulte, Fatima topped St. Clair 3-1 on Monday to advance to the Class 2 District 10 championship.

Lucas Rehagen scored the other goal for the Comets.

"It was a bit of new environment today. We had never played at St. James. They have a turf field, and it's a little narrow, so we struggled with our passing game a little because of the narrow space," coach Kirby Keth said. "But we really controlled the largest percentage of the game."

Kaleb Bauer had two assists, and Dakota Dickneite had one.

St. Claire scored in the first minute of the second half to tie the game at 1, but Fatima found the net twice more.

"I really felt like the boys played a pretty good game. We just have to finish just a little bit better," Keth said. "We had some opportunitiess to score again at the end and just missed off the post. We need to be a little more disciplined on our attacking game."

In Wednesday's championship game, Fatima (17-7) will meet Sullivan (5-14), which defeated St. James 4-3 in overtime on Monday. Fatima and Sullivan did not meet in the regular season.

"We'll just have to go down and play good soccer, and hopefully we'll be able to come on top," Keth said. "This is districts, and you never overlook any team this time of year. ... We will respect them and play hard and hopefully come away with the victory."
