Mayor Struemph won't seek re-election

Jefferson City Mayor Eric Struemph announced today that he will not seek re-election in 2015.

The mayor made the announcement in a city news release this morning.

The release said that after six years in public office, Struemph remains committed to Jefferson City and is focused on completing the many tasks before the city between now and the end of his term. He announced his intentions now so others who are interested in running for the office will have adequate time to make that decision.

Struemph cited a recent health scare that forced him to reflect on where he is most needed at this time.

"My daughters are in their most formative years and Darla and I need to focus on them. I also need more time to spend with my parents. My father has been battling Alzheimer's and is in the later stages of this horrible disease. My mom has done an outstanding job as his caretaker and it is time for me to be there for her."

Struemph went on to say, "Serving in public office has been the most rewarding, challenging and humbling experience. I am grateful to the citizens of Jefferson City for electing me first to City Council and then to the office of mayor. I look forward to continuing to serve Jefferson City through volunteer efforts and by participating in the public process."

Struemph did not rule out the possibility of seeking public office in the future.
