Cole County maintains 911 deal with city

Cole County has renewed its annual contract with Jefferson City for 911 service.

No formal vote was taken by the County Commission. As has been done in previous years, the commission simply let the automatic renewal clause in its contract with Jefferson City take effect.

The commission had to make a decision on renewing the service by Oct. 15.

Earlier this year, the commission had looked at the creation of a separate county 911 system, but it eventually determined that would duplicate existing services and be costly for the county.

The Jefferson City Police Department runs the 911 center for the city and Cole County. The county pays for the dispatching of calls for the sheriff's department and sending calls to the county ambulance service for dispatching.

Cole County pays 25 percent of the amount in the Jefferson City government's adopted budget for 911 operations, which for 2015 is $349,556.

Presiding Commissioner Marc Ellinger, who is not seeking re-election, urged his fellow commissioners to look at the contract each year to see if the county needed to seek any changes.
