Russellville students celebrate different cultures

The Russellville High School Multicultural Club honored cultures around the world Monday as part of National Multicultural Day.

Each member's locker door was decorated with a picture representing a foreign country, a banner was hung in the main hallway and a cafeteria poster thanked Anya Krupchenko for coming to the school from Russia as an exchange student this year.

After school, the club met in the library to hear Krupchenko talk about her country. Her PowerPoint presentation included history, geography, holidays, foods and her school. She showed items made in Russia, and passed around a box of candy from her homeland.

Krupchenko answered questions and shared pictures of her family. Her host family is the Sonny Jungmeyer family in Russellville.

Special guests at the club meeting included Jabir Hossain, exchange student from Bangladesh at Helias Catholic High School, and his host mother, Theresa Buhr. Hossain will share a similar presentation about his country at the November meeting of the Multicultural Club.

School board OKs survey

Russellville school parents may soon see a survey to determine whether there is a need for an after-school child care program.

The Cole County R-1 Board of Education approved the survey at its regular meeting recently.

The board also considered a drawing and proposal by Brad Schafer with J Price Architecture for an awning over the elementary school entrance at a cost of about $25,000.

A memorandum of understanding with Nichols Career Center for the current school year was approved at $1,550 per student from Russellville to attend the vocational school.

The board also learned that several Professional Learning Communities (PLC) have been invited to present their successes at the statewide PLC meeting in January.
