Your Opinion: Frustrating inaction on roads

Dear Editor:

For more than two years, we have been working with the Callaway County Commission to set up a Neighborhood Improvement District and improve the roads in our subdivision. Despite platitudes from our county commissioners, we still have deteriorating roads and no resolution in sight. The path has been blocked with delays, cost increases and procedural hurdles. A design was bid earlier this summer only to be rejected because the cost was too high from what we, the homeowners, expected. While that might not be the direct fault of our commission, the result is more cost to us without a realistic plan to more forward.

One of the reasons we are in this predicament is the lack of planning and zoning for Callaway county. The developer was allowed to do whatever he wanted, and as a result, the homeowners were stuck with subpar construction and are now effectively left to fend for ourselves. It's a scenario that has played out around the county multiple times.

The commission has been working to help us, except that we are still in the same position we were more than two years ago. I'm understandably disappointed.

I mention this to you now because an election is coming up this fall. Perhaps you, too, have been frustrated with the inadequacies of our government. We have the opportunity to make a change, but only if we vote. I suggest that you consider an alternative to the incumbents. We get the government we deserve, and quite frankly, we deserve better. We must take that initiative to halt business as usual by refreshing our democracy. I hope you will consider our plight, and ask if you are being well served by our current leadership. If not, I hope you vote for change.
