Crash kills fire chief in southern Missouri

ALTON (AP) - A volunteer fire chief who also worked as a police officer in south-central Missouri has died in a crash on his way to a fire.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says 45-year-old Eddie Johnson, of Alton, was killed just before noon Monday on U.S. 160 west of Alton, in Oregon County. The patrol says Johnson's SUV went off the road, hit a driveway and overturned. Johnson was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown out.

KYTV reports Johnson was a full-time Alton police officer and an Oregon County reserve deputy. He had been chief of Alton's volunteer fire department since 2010.

The Alton department and others were responding to a house fire. The home was destroyed.
