Helias midfielder Braden Remmert celebrates with teammate Sam Heckart (4)following Heckart's goal off Remmert's corner kick late in the second half of Saturday's match against Carthage at 179 Soccer Park.

It's a sibling rivalry. But it's a good one for the Helias Crusaders.

"In means a lot because it's my big brother's record," Braden Remmert said Saturday after he tied his brother's career assist mark in the Helias' 3-2 win against Carthage in the Helias Shootout at the 179 Soccer Park.

Remmert's two assists pulled him even at 27 with his brother, Justin, who set the record in 2002-04.

"I've got another year, so maybe I can put up a number that will be tough to beat for a long time," Remmert, a junior, said.

The record-tying assist fittingly came on the game-winning goal.

Ian Luebbert scored twice for Helias in the opening five minutes, the second on an assist by Remmert, before Carthage came back to tie it midway through the second half.

"We were talking at halftime and we knew they were going to start bringing it at us," Helias coach Chuck Register said. "They started forcing the play."

With a little less than eight minutes remaining, the Crusaders got a corner kick. Remmert centered the ball in front of the Carthage net, where sophomore Sam Heckart was waiting to score the goal.

"That gave us a great chance to attack the goal and we did on the corner kick," Register said.

The Remmert-Heckart connection has proven to be potent on corner kicks this season.

"We still have another year of it, which is nice," Register said. "It's been good for us all year, it's giving us some goals."

While scoring is nice, Remmert believes getting an assist is nicer.

"It's always more fun to get a beautiful assist," he said. "I think it's a lot bigger to get one."

Helias goalkeeper Ben Mitan had to make some big saves in the win. The most impressive came just a few minutes after Luebbert's second goal, when he punched out a Carthage corner kick, then dove to make a save on the ensuing shot.

"I thought that was in and he got to it," Register said.

The win was a measure of revenge for Helias, which dropped a 4-0 decision to Carthage in the quarterfinals last season.

"To come away with a win is significant for us," Register said. "We played two solid halves and I was glad to see that."

Helias (8-11-2) will play Tuesday at Southern Boone before closing the regular season Wednesday at home against Sedalia Sacred Heart.
