Eight-hour standoff ends with arrest of Fulton man

A Fulton man occupied about 23 officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Callaway County Sheriff's Office and the Fulton Police Department overnight Tuesday in an eight-hour standoff.

Jodey Stuart, 34, of Fulton allegedly led Fulton Police on a chase after an officer attempted to stop Stuart after failing to yield near 10th and Bluff streets in a Ford pickup. The officer noticed the vehicle matched the description of one stolen, according to a Fulton Police Department press release.

The chase ended near County Roads 216 and 217. The press release states that the standoff began when Stuart revealed he was in possession of a handgun and threatened to hurt himself.

Callaway County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Darryl Maylee said officers kept the line of communication open, and Stuart eventually surrendered.

Maylee said the standoff lasted for eight hours to ensure the safety of Stuart, a female who was inside the truck and officers. Because Stuart threatened to harm himself and the uncertainty of the female's role, Maylee said officers did not want to charge at the subjects.

The resolution ended peacefully, the release stated.

Officers allegedly discovered firearms inside the vehicle that were stolen from an earlier burglary in Fulton.

Stuart is being charged with first-degree tampering, resisting arrest by flight, felony possession of a firearm and burglary.

The female inside the vehicle was also detained and additional charges are possible pending a further investigation.
