Police make arrest in Steak 'n Shake assault

Jefferson City police have arrested a 24-year-old Jefferson City man in connection with an assault at Steak 'n Shake on Saturday.

According to a release from the department, police began receiving calls about an assault at Steak 'n Shake on Missouri Boulevard at 2 a.m. Saturday. Arriving officers observed a 44-year-old Cole County resident, who was unnamed in the release, lying on the ground, conscious and breathing, but with blood coming from the back of his head.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Capital Region Medical Center for treatment, but was later transferred to a hospital in Columbia due to the severity of his head injury. He was found to have sustained two fractures to the back of his skull and remains in serious condition.

After several interviews, police arrested Ryan Kelly, 24, of Jefferson City, on Monday for the crime of first-degree assault. Kelly is in the Cole County Jail pending charges.

Jefferson City Police detectives are continuing to investigate and interview witnesses in the case.
