Lady Jays claim softball crown

COLUMBIA - Alyssa Schulte was 2-for-2 with an RBI and allowed two runs in seven innings as the top-seeded Jefferson City Lady Jays claimed a 5-2 win against second-seeded Waynesville on Monday in the Class 4 District 10 championship game.

Schulte improved to 10-5 on the year after allowing four hits and striking out eight to earn the complete-game victory for Jefferson City (17-7).

The Lady Jays will host Blue Springs (29-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a Class 4 sectional game at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex.

Waynesville (15-9) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but Brooke Rozier hit a two-run home run, her seventh of the year, to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Jefferson City didn't stop there.

Taylor Dey and Emily Williams hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth to give the Lady Jays a two-run cushion and Schulte added to the offensive attack with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to put the Lady Tigers away.

Williams was 3-for-3 for Jefferson City, which tallied eight hits in the contest.

Blue Springs claimed a 15-0 win in five innings against the Lady Jays on Sept 26 in the Kewpie Classic. Jefferson City was limited to one hit and had five errors in the contest, before winning its next three games.

The top-seeded Lady Wildcats claimed a 6-0 win in the semifinal round against Rock Bridge and edged Hickman 3-2 on Monday to win the Class 4 District 9 tournament, which was also played on the turf field at Hickman.

Jefferson City's last district title came in 2011 when the Lady Jays held off Helias 3-2 before falling to Webb City in the quarterfinals.
