Our Opinion: United Way campaign nears home stretch

Using the theme, "There's No Place Like Home," area United Way volunteers have passed the halfway point in the fundraising campaign and are sprinting home.

Based on the multitude of activities organized by area businesses and their employees, including the Pacesetters, we have witnessed an energetic effort this fall.

"We are so excited about the energy surrounding the campaign," said Ann Bax, president of the United Way of Central Missouri. "Businesses have had a lot of fun with this Wizard of Oz-themed campaign which has provided for opportunities for staff to dress up like Wizard of Oz characters to raise additional dollars for the campaign, and for "LIVE UNITED' scarecrows to show an organization's support of the United Way."

That enthusiasm must not falter as the campaign approaches its conclusion on Oct. 31. This year, the area United Way set an ambitious goal to raise $1.75 million -- $50,000 more than last year's goal.

The goal is not a random number; United Way volunteers scrutinize the budgets of partner agencies and programs, then decide on the amount required to meet the needs of area residents. This year, the area United Way will help fund 27 partner agencies and programs serving people in Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage and southern Callaway counties.

Last year, more than 85,000 people in the Mid-Missouri area were touched by a United Way of Central Missouri partner agency, Bax said.

She added: "I also believe the community has embraced the "There's No Place Like Home' theme because it's very relevant for this close-knit community we call home. Now more than ever, help is needed to make our community a better place to call home for those most vulnerable. Families have lost their homes due to tough economic times, fire or natural disasters; seniors struggle to remain independent and in their homes; at-risk youth need a safe home away-from-home where they feel love and support."

This year's brochure points out that 92 cents every dollar go directly to services and one of every two people is served by a United Way partner agency.

That means your contribution is helping your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Stories abound concerning United Way recipients who now serve as United Way volunteers and give back to the people who helped them in times of need.

Reciprocity is a component of the United Way. People contribute when they are able and receive when they are in need.

Bax said: "We are proud of our caring community, and are grateful for the ongoing generous outpouring of support. Through your support of the United Way of Central Missouri you are changing lives!"

Assisting the United Way effort is an opportunity to enrich someone's life.

Opportunities don't get any better, or more neighborly.
