FESTUS, Mo. (AP) - Officials in an eastern Missouri city are planning a "goose shoot" at a city park where they say the geese population is out of control.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported (http://bit.ly/1tgRCxu) Thursday that the Festus City Council gave preliminary approval to the shoot but is still working out the details.
Officials say hundreds of geese leave droppings on the fields and sidewalks of the West City Park.
City Administrator Happy Welch says officials have tried a variety of methods to chase the geese out of park but they always return. He called the situation "out of control."
Concerned about a park festival this weekend, Mayor Mike Cage asked visitors not to feed the geese because the birds create a nuisance and can carry diseases.
