BizBeat: Changes underway in downtown drug store

After purchasing downtown's Tolson Drug Store in summer 2013, Cameron Schulte is checking off his list of to-dos.

The Jefferson City native said he had a plan when he purchased the store and has slowly been making progress with the changes.

Customers may have noticed last week that half the store was blocked off from floor to ceiling. The old tile floors were ripped up and the hardwood floors hiding underneath were given a second life.

The work will be finished on that half of the store early this week, and Schulte expects to start moving things to the finished half right away. The rest of the floor will be restored in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Schulte appreciates patience from his customers.

"We appreciate them working with us. They're still coming in," he said, noting the back door was blocked off last week due to the work being done.

Next on the list is to rework and nearly triple the size of the pharmacy area. The food and beverage area where many customers visit for a quick and inexpensive lunch, will also see a little work to make it more efficient, Schulte said. Restoring the tin ceilings is also on the redo list. Once the store is put back together, Schulte said he hopes to add more grocery-type items. He plans to have frozen foods and a produce area added in the future.

"Thank you for your patience, and I hope you like it when it's all done," Schulte said to his customers.
