New Bloomfield Elementary MAP scores drop

NEW BLOOMFIELD, Mo. - New Bloomfield Elementary School saw decreases in the percentage of students who scored proficient or better on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) test from 2013-14 for every subject and grade level.

Third grade English/language arts, fifth grade math and fifth grade science had smaller drops in scores - decreasing by a few percentage points. Fourth and fifth grade English/language arts as well as third and fourth grade math had larger drops in the percentage of students who scored proficient or better on the tests.

The school's smallest decrease was third grade English/language arts. The percentage of third graders who scored proficient in English/language arts went up while the percentage that scored advanced dropped. In 2014, 20.9 percent of third-grade students scored proficient in the subject compared to 19.6 in 2013. Also in 2014, 14 percent of third graders scored advanced in the subject compared to 17.9 the year before.

The school's largest decrease in the percentage of students scoring proficient or better was fourth grade math. In 2014, 28.8 percent of fourth graders scored proficient in the subject, compared to 49 percent the year before. Also in 2014, 5.1 percent of fourth graders scored advanced in math compared to 10.2 percent in 2013.

Fourth grade math was also the New Bloomfield R-II School District's largest percentage decrease.

Fifth grade science saw a slight drop - three percentage points - in the number of students who scored proficient or better. However, fifth grade science also saw a drop in the number of students who scored below proficient, and an increase in the percentage who scored basic from 2013-14.

In 2013, 6.3 percent of fifth graders scored below basic in science, while in 2014 there was no reportable data for that category on the MAP results.

And, the percentage of students who scored basic went from 43.8 in 2013 up to 49 percent in 2014.

Elementary Principal Julie Gerloff told the Fulton Sun she did not have time for an interview this week to answer questions about the school's scores.
