Plans to tear down old county jail and sheriff's house on hold

For now, plans to tear down the old Cole County Jail and sheriff's house are on hold.

That's after the county commission decided not to move forward with those plans to address county office space needs, Friday.

Meeting with Prosecutor Mark Richardson, Assessor Chris Estes and Sheriff Greg White, commissioners did decide they wanted to talk with the county auditor's office about setting aside a certain amount in the county's reserves to be saved for expansion and not to be to used for anything else, unless it was an extremely dire need.

They also will be looking at trying to put aside money each year in the county's budget that could go towards expansion plans.

"At least the historic people will be happy for now," Presiding Commissioner Marc Ellinger said. He referred to efforts earlier this year by historic preservationists asking the commission to not tear the jail and sheriff's house down.
