College wrestling: Johnson finishes 4-2

Former Jefferson City Jay

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Jared Johnson of Tennessee-Chattanoogs went 4-2 at the Navy Classic as the Mocs won the title at the 13-team event.

Johnson (Jefferson City High School) was part of 23rd-ranked Chattanooga's 108.5-point effort Saturday that topped Princeton by 2 points. Ohio, the nation's 24th-ranked team, was third with 105.5 and No. 19 Wisconsin was fourth at 105.

Competing at 285 pound, Johnson started out with a 3-0 win against Ray O'Donnell of Princeton.

He then lost by fall to Joe Stolfi of Bucknell, but came back to win by pin in just 1:35 against Jesse Webb of Ohio.

Johnson then beat Samuel Breese of Kent State 10-1 before winning by fall in 1:19 against Colynn Cook of Navy.

His day came to a close when he lost 3-1 in sudden victory to Anthony Vizcarrondo of West Virginia.

The effort came a week to the day after Johnson helped the Mocs claim three wins at the Eastern Michigan Duals in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Chattanooga started that event with a 24-13 win against Michigan State, with Johnson beating Chris Nash of the Spartans by a 4-0 score. It was just the Mocs' fifth-ever win against a Big Ten opponent.

Chattanooga then beat Northern Illinois 34-9, with Johnson claiming an 11-2 win against Arthur Bunce of the Huskies.

The Mocs finished up with a 23-15 win against then-No. 25 Kent State. Johnson dropped a 5-3 decision to Mimmo Lytle of the Golden Flashes.

The Mocs opened the season Nov. 9 at the Hokie Open hosted in Blacksburg, Va. Johnson finished fifth with a 4-1 record.
