The VFW Basinger/Sone Memorial Post 1003 announced the winners of the local 2014 Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teachers Awards.

Winning teachers were Catherine Bertolotti, art teacher at St. Peter School; Kathryn Schebaum, social studies and contemporary issues teacher at Lewis and Clark Middle School; and Eileen Scrivner, American history special service teacher at Jefferson City High School.

The award was established in 1999 to recognize classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education.

Three teachers from each grade level are selected locally and then go to district level. The winners then go to the national level.
