2 treated and released after car/police wreck

A Jefferson City police officer and another Jefferson City man were treated and released from local hospitals Friday night after their vehicles collided.

Police didn't name the officer, but reported he was hurt when his 2012 Chevrolet Police Tahoe was hit at the intersection of Monroe and East Miller streets by a 2013 Jeep Latitude, driven by Casey E. Burns, 23.

Police said the accident happened at 7:34 p.m. Friday when Burns headed west on Miller Street, failed to stop for the posted stop sign at Monroe and pulled into the intersection as the Tahoe was heading north.

Investigators said the officer swerved to avoid a crash, but the Jeep hit the rear corner of the passenger side, causing the Tahoe to spin clockwise then roll onto the driver's side.

The unnamed officer had to be extricated from the Tahoe before being taken to the hospital.

Police said the officer, Burns and Megan Browning, 24, Jefferson City - a passenger in Burns' Jeep - all were using seatbelts.

Browning wasn't injured.
