Stenger tops Stream by narrow margin

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - St. Louis County Democrat Steve Stenger has apparently defeated Republican state lawmaker Rick Stream for the county's top political job in a campaign dominated by the Ferguson police shooting.

Stenger won by less than 2,000 votes, or 0.6 percent, in balloting Tuesday. It wasn't immediately clear if Stream would request a recount.

Stenger won despite a push by some black activists and political leaders to support Stream over Stenger's ties to prosecutor Bob McCulloch, a Democrat re-elected without opposition.

Stenger resisted calls for McCulloch to recuse himself from the investigation into Michael Brown's shooting death by Ferguson officer Darren Wilson. Concerns had been raised about Mcculloch's family ties to law enforcement.

McCulloch's endorsement helped Stenger, who is white, defeat incumbent Charlie Dooley, who is black, in the August primary.
