Man faces multiple charges following chase

A Jefferson City man is facing multiple charges after being involved in a chase with authorities Thursday night.

Steven Heflin, 34, 4023 Shamrock Road, is charged with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting a lawful stop, driving while intoxicated and driving while suspended.

A Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement stated a deputy noticed Heflin driving erratically at 8:51 p.m. on Business 50 in Apache Flats.

Heflin did not stop after the deputy turned on his emergency lights and siren, and a pursuit began.

After failing to stop for a stop sign at Covered Wagon Drive and New Frontier Drive, Heflin drove off the road and into a field. He got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, but eventually was caught in a trailer park in the 5400 block of Business 50.

Heflin told authorities he ran because he was high on drugs.

He later told authorities he didn't stop because he knew the vehicle he was driving was stolen.

A check of court records also showed Heflin was wanted in Texas on a charge of drug possession.
