Smoke in apartment hallway prompts brief evacuation

The Jefferson City Fire Department was called to investigate a report of smoke inside an apartment building early Friday.

Firefighters responded to the Heritage Apartments complex around 1:45 a.m. Initial reports indicate they discovered a light haze of smoke inside the hallway of the apartment building at 811 Monroe Street.

Residents were evacuated safely for a brief period of time while the source was identified and eradicated. Firefighters damaged at least one apartment door as they forced entry to a unit where there was no response to their knocking.

Fire trucks began clearing from the scene shortly after 2:10 a.m.
