Crazy day regarding 1,600 record

The all-classes state record for the girls 1,600-meter run stood for 25 years until it was broken Friday.

The new record didn't even last 25 minutes.

Due to a crazy series of events, the record of 4:47.53 set in 1989 by Hazelwood Central's Megan Thompson got trumped in back-to-back races in the MSHSAA Class 3-4 Track and Field Championships at Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

The fun started in the Class 4 girls race, where Eureka's Hannah Long repeated as champion of the event and broke the mark by finishing in a time of 4:46.21. That was also good enough to claim the Class 4 record, as that was the class Thompson competed in when she set her mark.

But roughly 10 minutes later, Long's record fell at the end of the Class 3 race. That's because Ste. Genevieve's Taylor Werner, who was also a repeat champion in the event, put up a blistering pace and crossed the finish line in 4:44.26.

So while Long still holds the Class 4 mark, Werner now holds the all-classes record.

The runner-up to Werner almost broke a record as well. Festus' Jamie Kempfer finished behind Werner in what would have been a Class 3 record time of 4:49.27, breaking the mark of 4:51.70 set by Festus' Alyssa Allison in 2008.

Werner later decided one title wasn't enough on the day, as she also captured a title in the 800-meter run.

That wasn't the only record to fall during the opening day of the two-day meet, as Emily Presley of St. Clair broke the Class 3 girls pole vault record by clearing 12-6. That topped the mark of 12-5 set by Branson's Tara Diebold in 2007.

Fort Osage's Asia Cole pulled off a three-peat Friday, as she captured the title in the Class 4 shot put for the third straight year.

In addition to repeating in the 1,600, Long also repeated as champion in the 800-meter run.
