Our Opinion: Thank you, educators, for making a difference

Thank you, educators.

As another school year draws to a close, we extend our appreciation to the administrators, teachers and staff who often go above and beyond job requirements to instruct, encourage and inspire students.

We believe educators are undervalued in our society. Today's teachers are trained professionals who deserve to be rewarded with requisite compensation.

We believe learning is the magical moment when a student absorbs a lesson, whether taught by a teacher, a book, an experience, or some other source.

Educational systems are attempts to translate those individual moments into an ongoing, group setting.

Despite repeated attempts, education systems continually are being adapted in an effort to find a more successful model. As examples, the Jefferson City Public Schools are transitioning to the academy concept, the State Department of Education adopted Common Core standards and the Missouri Legislature recently rejected Common Core and authorized devising an alternative.

Teachers must adapt to system alterations and innovations, without allowing chaos and flux to seep into the classroom. Whatever upheaval the system is experiencing, teachers must maintain the consistency and confidence that facilitate learning.

In recent weeks, we have published stories about students graduating from area schools, as well as a spectrum of awards and accomplishments.

These achievements by students reflect the talents and dedication of their teachers.

One of the many roles of a teacher is to make a difference in a student's life.

That is one of the most important things a person can do, and educators are committed to doing it every day.

For that commitment, they deserve our gratitude.
