4 injured in holiday weekend accidents

At least four people were sent to hospitals after traffic accidents during the Memorial Day weekend.

• Rebecca L. Sawyer, 24, Jefferson City, was treated Monday afternoon at Capital Region Medical Center, after her eastbound 2007 Chevrolet Impala ran into the back of a 1996 Chevrolet Astro van.

The Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 12:30 p.m. Monday on Lookout Trail, two-tenths of a mile east of Bessie Drive in Cole County, when James D. Cramer, 76, Centertown, slowed to turn his van into a parking lot.

Sawyer wasn't able to stop before her car ran into the van.

She was using a seat belt but Cramer was not.

He also had minor injuries, but was treated at the accident scene.

• Jake W. Cox, 22, Tuscumbia, was taken to Lake Regional Hospital Sunday evening after his 1990 GEO Prizm ran off Missouri 17 in Miller County, 916 feet north of the junction with Missouri 42.

The Patrol said Cox was southbound on Missouri 17 when the car ran off the right side of the highway, then off the left side after he overcorrected. The car hit an embankment, overturned and then struck a tree.

The accident happened at 6:50 p.m. Cox wasn't using a seat belt, the patrol said.

• Stephen L. Bumgarner, 56, Muskogee, Okla., was taken to St. Mary's Health Center after his 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle slid off Route CC in Callaway County, a mile south of County Road 428, near Steadman.

Troopers said Bumgarner was thrown from the motorcycle when it struck a ditch, about 5:20 p.m. Sunday. He was wearing a helmet, the patrol said.

• Rosebud resident William P. Willis, 69, was injured seriously in a one-vehicle wreck Saturday evening in Gasconade County.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said he was southbound on Danz Road, about two-tenths of a mile south of Hafertafe Road, when his 2012 Honda All Terrain Vehicle skidded off the right side of the road. It overturned and Willis was ejected onto the middle of the road, and the ATV landed on top of him.

Willis, who was not wearing a safety device, was life-flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur.

No treatment information was available about any of the accident victims.
