Free vaccination for those exposed to Hepatitis A at Springfield restaurant

The Cole County Health Department in Jefferson City has free hepatitis A vaccine available for individuals who ate at the Red Robin restaurant on South Glenstone Avenue in Springfield, Missouri, from May 8-16.

On Wednesday it was announced a restaurant worker tested positive for hepatitis A. Out of an abundance of caution, the Springfield-Greene County Health Department is recommending that people who ate at the Red Robin restaurant from May 8 - May 16 contact their healthcare provider regarding the need for treatment after exposure to hepatitis A.

Previously unvaccinated individuals exposed to hepatitis A may benefit from a hepatitis A vaccine. However, the vaccine must be given within 14 days of exposure to be effective. If you have any questions or concerns about exposure or the vaccine, please call the Cole County Health Department at 573-636-2181.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that ranges in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. Hepatitis A is spread through person to person contact and contaminated food or water. Symptoms of hepatitis A include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, and jaundice. It may take 28 to 30 days for symptoms to develop.

The Cole County Health Department hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:30a.m.-4:30 p.m.
