WASHINGTON (AP) - Alfredo Simon settled down after a rough start and came back after a 61-minute rain delay to win his sixth game, allowing one run over seven innings Thursday in the Cincinnati Reds' 2-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Simon gave up a leadoff homer to Denard Span in the first, worked out of a jam in the second, then allowed only three more baserunners as the Reds finished a road trip by taking two of three from Washington.
Simon (6-2) threw two innings after the storm that interrupted the game for just over an hour. Jonathan Broxton handled the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a one-two-three ninth for his third save, hitting 103 mph on the stadium's radar gun on a pitch while striking out Danny Espinosa.
Brandon Phillips and Brayan Pena had RBI singles in the fourth against Tanner Roark (3-2), who allowed six hits and two runs - one unearned - over six innings for the Nationals.
BREWERS 6, BRAVES 1
ATLANTA (AP) - Mark Reynolds hit a first-inning grand slam, Kyle Lohse combined with Francisco Rodriguez on a five-hitter and the Brewers ended a four-game losing streak.
Carlos Gomez added a two-run homer in the fourth for Milwaukee.
Lohse (6-1) was sharp in going eight innings to win his sixth straight decision. He gave up one run on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Lohse's only loss of the season came against the Braves on April 1.
After being shut out 5-0 Tuesday night, the Brewers skipped batting practice Wednesday and then jumped on Ervin Santana (4-2) in the first inning. Gomez singled, Scooter Gennett doubled and Jonathan Lucroy took a one-out walk before Reynolds' third career grand slam - a line drive over the left-field wall.
Reynolds snapped a 0-for-12 streak with his ninth homer.
GIANTS 5, ROCKIES 1
DENVER (AP) - Hunter Pence hit one of San Francisco's three solo homers and reliever Yusmeiro Petit threw three sharp innings after starter Matt Cain left with a strained right hamstring.
Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Crawford also connected for the NL West-leading Giants, who won at Coors Field for just the fifth time in 15 games dating back to last season.
Cain didn't allow a hit through three innings, before giving way to Petit (3-1). He and four other relievers limited the best offensive team in the majors to just five hits.
Jhoulys Chacin (0-3) worked 5 2-3 innings and allowed three runs, including a homer to Pence in the fourth and another to Sandoval two innings later.
MARLINS 14, PHILLIES 5
MIAMI (AP) - Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help power Miami.
Christian Yelich, Garrett Jones, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia each drove in two runs for the Marlins, who have the best home record (18-6) in baseball.
Nathan Eovaldi (3-2) allowed three runs_one earned_and 10 hits in six innings for Miami.
Ozuna's first career grand slam and seventh home run of the season broke the game open in the seventh inning. Miami led 6-3 with two outs before Jeff Manship loaded the bases and Ozuna smacked a pitch over the left-field wall.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick (0-5) came into the game with a 10-game winning streak against the Marlins, but lost his 10th consecutive game overall.
DODGERS 4, METS 3
NEW YORK (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez homered for the third straight game, Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back shots for Los Angeles.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-2) came off the disabled list and pitched the Dodgers to their 11th victory in 12 meetings with the Mets dating to July 1, 2012. Ramirez drove in two runs and Los Angeles enjoyed most of the vocal support from the 23,721 fans at Citi Field, many of whom turned out to cheer Ryu.
The lefty from South Korea, sidelined since late April with shoulder inflammation, improved to 4-0 in five starts away from home this season.
Eric Campbell hit his first major league homer for the sputtering Mets, who fell to 5-14 in May with their sixth loss in seven games. David Wright, Juan Lagares and Wilmer Flores each had three of New York's 13 hits.
Jacob deGrom (0-2) gave up three solo homers over six innings in his second big league start. Pitching in place of injured Dillon Gee, the shaggy-haired right-hander wasn't quite as effective as last Thursday, when deGrom went seven innings in a 1-0 loss to the New York Yankees.
CARDINALS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2, 12 innings
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Arizona shortstop Chris Owings threw wildly to the plate on a bases-loaded grounder in the 12th inning, allowing Matt Holliday to score the winning run for St. Louis.
The Cardinals cut down the go-ahead run at the plate in the 10th on Daniel Descalso's perfect relay throw from down the left field line to nail Ender Inciarte trying to score from first on Paul Goldschmidt's two-out double.
Holliday walked off Trevor Cahill (1-6) to start the 12th. Matt Adams doubled and Yadier Molina was walked intentionally. Allen Craig hit a grounder and Owings had plenty of time for a force play of the plate but his throw eluded catcher Miguel Montero.
Seth Maness (2-2) allowed a hit in the 12th for the Cardinals.
INTERLEAGUE
YANKEES 4, CUBS 2, 13 INNINGS
CHICAGO (AP) - Brendan Ryan scored on a wild pitch before John Ryan Murphy capped a two-run 13th inning with an RBI single, and New York beat the Cubs after Chicago wasted another dominant start by Jeff Samardzija.
New York scored two in the ninth against Hector Rondon to wipe out a 2-0 deficit. Samardzija pitched four-hit ball over seven innings.
Ryan started the winning rally with a leadoff single against Jose Veras (0-1). Yangervis Solarte walked, and the runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Preston Claiborne (2-0) toward third.
Ryan came home when Veras threw a pitch over Murphy's head, and Murphy drove in Solarte with a single to right to make it 4-2. The Yankees had runners on second and third with two out when Derek Jeter grounded out to end the rally.
Claiborne got the win, pitching 1 2-3 scoreless innings, and David Robertson worked the 13th for his ninth save in nine chances.
He gave up a one-out single to Welington Castillo but retired Nate Schierholtz on a fly and struck out John Baker to end the game after 4 hours, 39 minutes.
PIRATES 9, ORIOLES 8
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tony Sanchez's tiebreaking single scored Starling Marte in the bottom of the seventh to put Pittsburgh ahead to stay.
Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 4 with an RBI and his first two extra-base hits in more than two weeks for Pittsburgh, which won for only the third time in its past nine games. Marte and Ike Davis had three hits and two RBIs apiece for the Pirates.
Bryan Morris (4-0) earned the victory after allowing the Orioles to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Mark Melancon worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
Nelson Cruz hit his 14th homer of the season and drove in three runs for the Orioles. Nick Markakis, Chris Davis and JJ Hardy had two hits and one RBI apiece but Baltimore left 10 men on base and Ryan Webb (2-1) allowed Sanchez's sharp single to right in the seventh shortly after the Orioles had rallied to tie the game.
TWINS 2, PADRES 0
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Phil Hughes threw seven shutout innings and Trevor Plouffe homered for Minnesota.
Padres starter Tyson Ross (5-4) nearly matched Hughes, allowing one run on three hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out eight.
Chris Parmelee's sacrifice fly to left in the sixth scored Joe Mauer and Plouffe hit his third home run in the eighth.
Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth to collect his 14th save in 16 chances.
Hughes (5-1) came over from the Yankees in the offseason, signing a $24 million, three-year deal. He won his fifth straight decision and didn't walk a batter for the fifth consecutive start, while striking out seven.
The Padres have been shut out eight times, tops in the majors.
