Tuscumbia tops Newburg

To advance to district title game

NEWBURG - Orrie Patterson struck out 12 in six innings of work Tuesday as the Tuscumbia Lions defeated the Newburg Wolves 6-4 in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 9 Tournament.

With the win, Tuscumbia advances to take on Macks Creek in the district title game at 5 p.m. today. Macks Creek, the No. 3 seed, defeated second-seeded Crocker 10-7 in Tuesday's semifinal.

It would be the first district baseball title in Tuscumbia school history.

Nate Simmons and Zane Humphreys had two hits each for the Lions. One of Simmons' hits was a home run.

Patterson allowed four hits and four walks in the victory.
