Pilot Grove edges Calvary

NEW FRANKLIN - In a game where the slightest slip-up could make the difference, one did.

The Pilot Grove Tigers turned a Calvary Lutheran error into the game's only run and notched a 1-0 victory in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 10 Tournament on Monday night.

Neither team was able to score until Pilot Grove broke through with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.

After an error and a single, the second-seeded Tigers sacrificed to put runners at second and third. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Pilot Grove pulled off a successful squeeze bunt to push the run across.

The third-seeded Lions were unable to get the tying run in the top of the seventh.

Beau Monson was the tough-luck loser, as he threw a four-hitter, striking out one.

Monson also had one of just two hits for Calvary, with Caleb Propst getting the other.

Trenton Young threw the two-hitter for Pilot Grove, striking out 10.

Calvary ends the year with a record of 14-6.

Pilot Grove, meanwhile, will face New Franklin at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the championship. Top-seeded New Franklin rolled to a 14-1 win against fourth-seeded Jamestown on Monday.
