Clausen captures tennis singles title

COLUMBIA - Jefferson City's David Clausen won the singles championship in the Class 2 District 9 individual tournament Saturday with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Hickman's Junyi Wu in the championship match.

Clausen defeated Helias' Ethan Lesko 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Rock Bridge's Nate Horvit 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals en route to the title.

This is the first district singles championship for a Jefferson City player since 2007 Clausen advances to individual sectionals Tuesday in Waynesville.

Jefferson City's doubles team of David Steinmeyer and Spencer Bone placed fourth in the tournament. They defeated Helias' Caleb Seidel and Jeremy Wolters 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals before dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Rock Bridge's Rohit Rao and Raymond Majors in the semifinals. They then lost an 11-10 (7-2 tiebreaker) decision to Hickman's Sam Pottipadu and Blake Wisniewski in the third-place match.

The Jays' doubles team of Joey Mendez and Josh Morris defeated Helias' Kirk Tweous and T.J. Hagenhoff 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Rock Bridge's Brian Baker and Harry Bozoian in the quarterfinals.

Jefferson City's Dane Biesemeyer won his first-round singles match against Andrew Tilley from Sedalia Smith-Cotton 6-2, 6-1 before dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Wu in the quarterfinals.
