Chicago tops Sporting KC

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Mike Magee converted two penalty kicks in a 10-minute span of the first half Sunday and the Chicago Fire beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1.

The victory was the second straight for the Fire (2-2-6, 12 points), while defending Major League Soccer champion Sporting (5-4-2, 17 points) lost for the second time in four days.

Magee's opening goal came in the sixth minute after forward Quincy Amarikwa was tripped by Sporting goalkeeper Eric Kronberg inside the penalty box. He delivered a successful shot to the right of Kronberg, who dove the opposite way.

Magee made the second one in nearly the same spot for his fourth goal of the season after midfielder Benji Joya was knocked down inside the box.

Kansas City broke the shutout in the 68th minute on Dom Dwyer's header.

Sporting Kansas City, missing five players due to national team call and injuries, pressed 17-year-old defender Erik Palmer-Brown into service. He was ejected after picking up two yellow cards.

Palmer-Brown is the youngest player in MLS history to start as a defender, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
