Your Opinion: How much more taxation can we take?

Dear Editor:

Heavens to Betsy everything that moves has been or is being taxed to death. Where government or businesses can find something to tax they can and will. But it's mostly the poor and getting-poorer taxpayer who has to pay the price. Animals, buildings and other inordinate entities are not aware of their standing in the various theme of things for their expenses.

These parking meters are another problem on the streets; they appear everywhere you look. This reminds me of the ongoing commercial on television that catches this citizen's eye each time it appears; the poor guy out to plug the parking meter and as he begins the process the car has a mind of its own and starts backing quite fast down the same with the poor guy seeing what is happening chasing after it. A person at one time was able to find a parking place but no longer is this possible.

A person can hardly walk down the sidewalks with all the tables and chairs occupying the spaces in front of these stores and baskets of flowers hanging everywhere, even on the corners and these too are in front of the store fronts. It is for sure overdone. And these cutouts in the uptown area take away the parking spaces as well as people dwelling in the lofts being able to park in front of the same. And business firms occupy so many of the buildings. It is just not attractive to many shoppers and that speaks for many who shop out of town or through the mail or by other means. Business owners seem to be copycats; it's a case of follow the leader for decorating all the same.

At Stix Baer & Fuller in St. Louis we were particularly fond of shopping here as well as Famous Barr and others because they always had their own decorating fashion, all different and so tastefully done.

Just how much more can citizens take in the form of taxation? It seems we'll soon find out as one lawmaker remarked in a recent news release that more money would have to be found. Woe to taxpayers. Citizens should be considered first, not the greed of politicians.
