JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri lawmakers have sent Gov. Jay Nixon a bill providing sales tax breaks for fitness centers, data storage centers and electrical utilities.
The legislation would exempt resources and machinery used by utilities to produce and transmit electricity. Data storage centers would get a tax break for the electricity, machinery, equipment and parts they use.
The measure also narrows the definition of entertainment and recreation events for which sales tax can be charged. Current law had been interpreted to apply the tax to use of fitness centers and other athletic facilities. Lawmakers say that's not what they originally intended.
Senators approved the measure 24-7 on Friday, and the House passed it 92-34.
